Action for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage from the Impacts of Climate Change

About

The pioneering effort for the “protection of underwater cultural heritage from the impacts of climate change," part of the broader project “Underwater Archaeological Research of Kasos-Karpathos,” is an innovative initiative (2024-2025) led by the Institute of Historical Research (National Hellenic Research Foundation), supported by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities.

Aim

This effort aims to protect and showcase metal artifacts—such as cannons and anchors—found on the seabed of Kasos, which are currently threatened by climate change. By applying the in situ cathodic protection method—implemented for the first time in Greek waters—these objects are effectively shielded from corrosion, significantly extending their lifespan. In this way, a highly significant chapter of our underwater history is preserved, while also promoting sustainable tourism development in the area through diving routes that blend scientific innovation, cultural heritage, and environmental awareness.
