Underwater Archaeological Survey at Kasos and Karpathos Islands
The first systematic survey of the sea of Kasos and Karpathos
The Kasos-Karpathos Maritime Archaeological Project is the first comprehensive archaeological survey conducted in the waters surrounding the islands of Kasos and Karpathos. The research project began in 2019 in Kasos and continues to this day, expanding to include the neighboring island of Karpathos. Its primary objective is to identify, document, and study the underwater cultural heritage in this region, which has historically been a crossroads of civilizations and a center of navigation from antiquity to modern times.
In addition to archaeological documentation, the project aims to emphasize the ongoing interaction between people and the sea, fostering a greater understanding of the cultural heritage of the Southeastern Aegean.

Ιnterdisciplinary research
While our primary focus is on underwater archaeological research, the program adopts a broader approach by integrating scientific and cultural activities. These efforts aim to highlight the rich history and natural environment of Kasos and Karpathos. Specifically, our projects include:
- Conservation of Antiquities:
Implement preventive measures and on-site interventions to protect underwater cultural heritage. - Climate Change:
Research the impact of climate change on the preservation of underwater cultural heritage. - Diagnostic Methods:
Conduct laboratory analyses to enhance dating accuracy and understand material composition and preservation conditions. - Educational Programmes:
Develop programmes that connect culture, the sea, and education, aiming to engage students, university scholars, and the general public. - Oceanographic Studies:
Investigate the marine characteristics of the area to understand the environmental factors affecting the preservation of shipwrecks. - Innovative Technologies::
Utilize advanced sonar systems, LIDAR, and drones for detailed mapping of the seabed and archaeological sites. - Artist Residencies::
Facilitate artistic residencies in the field, allowing artists to interact with the research team and create new works that highlight the relationship between art and science. - Scientific Publications:
Publish research in peer-reviewed Greek and international scientific journals, conferences, and other scholarly editions. - Dissemination:
Produce original audiovisual material to promote the research to the general public, participate in film festivals, and publish articles in the press.
The main concern of the Kasos-Karpathos Maritime Archaeological Project is to support the seamless interaction of local people with the sea (recreational and professional fishermen, scuba and freedivers, etc), through the knowledge of the cultural landscape of Kasos and Karpathos, but also through the promotion of their present activities as a continuing cultural product
from antiquity until the present day.

Our Goal
The main aim of the Kasos-Karpathos Maritime Archaeological Project is the promotion of the rich maritime cultural heritage of Kasos island at a local, national, and international level.
Specifically:
Location & Documentation
Location, recording, and documentation of underwater archaeological sites through archive research, underwater survey, mapping the seabed, sampling archaeological finds and geoarchaeological study.
Study & Data Analysis
The study of archaeological artifacts and sites will be combined with the typological and quantitative analysis of the cargoes discovered to offer a better understanding of the intensity of trading activity through the sea.
Visualisation & Publication
Visualisation and publication of the results of the scientific work through the creation of an interactive database, accessible through the internet.
Promotion
Promoting people's activity at sea as a cultural product and illustrating the ways that their uninterrupted interaction with the sea reflects the continuity of their maritime history.
