Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project

Systematic underwater archaeological survey at Kasos Island.

The first
systematic research project at the sea of Kasos Island

Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project is a systematic underwater archaeological survey held at Kasos Island (Greece) as a three-year research project (2019 – 2021). It is a collaborative project between the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) and the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities (EUA). It is the first systematic research project at the sea of Kasos Island. Its main aim is to locate, record, and study the submerged antiquities of this geographical area that has been an important point in the sailing routes through antiquity.

Ιnterdisciplinary research

A major characteristic of this project is the interdisciplinary approach taken during fieldwork but also, during the study and interpretation of the produced data. Specialists from a wide range of backgrounds are involved in the project: archaeologists, conservators, engineers, surveyors, geologists, commercial divers, historians, heritage managers, etc. Cooperation between different scientists and specialists, as well as the use of new technologies, will allow an innovative and spherical approach of the maritime heritage of Kasos island.

The main concern of the Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project is to support the seamless interaction of local people with the sea (recreational and professional fishermen, scuba and freedivers, etc), through the knowledge of the cultural landscape of Kasos, but also through the promotion of their present activities as a continuing cultural product from antiquity until the present day.

Our Goal

The main aim of the Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project is the promotion of the rich maritime cultural heritage of Kasos island at a local, national, and international level.
Specifically:

Location & Documentation

Location, recording, and documentation of underwater archaeological sites through archive research, underwater survey, mapping the seabed, sampling archaeological finds and geoarchaeological study.

Study &
Data Analysis

The study of archaeological artifacts and sites will be combined with the typological and quantitative analysis of the cargoes discovered to offer a better understanding of the intensity of trading activity through the sea.

Visualisation &
Publication

Visualisation and publication of the results of the scientific work through the creation of an interactive database, accessible through the internet.

Promotion

Promoting people's activity at sea as a cultural product and illustrating the ways that their uninterrupted interaction with the sea reflects the continuity of their maritime history.
